Our Healthy Happy Wonderful tip for this week is to REDUCE YOUR FOOD WASTE.

Did you know that for every 5 bags of groceries Australians bring home, the equivalent of one bag is wasted? Wasted food accounts for 40% of the contents of household rubbish bins.

Here are a few things we have done at my place to reduce food waste:

1. We check our fridge and pantry before we go shopping. That way we don't buy perishable foods we don't really need and won't use before they go out of date.

2. We get our veggies from the organic markets each week, so every week we make sure our vege fridge is emptied out ready for the new lot of fresh veggies! We also keep an eye on the other contents of our fridge, and make sure we use foods before they go out of date. This sometimes makes for some "unusual" meal combinations such as my "clean out the fridge" stew.

3. When you are cooking, don't put your veggie scraps in the bin. Put them into a bowl and save them to make veggie stock! I often put a pot of veggie stock on to simmer while we are eating.
