"Rules for Self Discovery:
1. What we want most;
2. What we think about most;
3. How we use our money;
4. What we do with our leisure time;
5. The company we enjoy;
6. Who and what we admire;
7. What we laugh at.”

What are your values?

Have you ever taken the time to think about it?

For many years, this was the "missing link" in my goal setting, which is why I now recommend people set SMART goals that are aligned with their values (you can read about it here!)

If we set a goal that is not aligned with the values we hold dear, we are very unlikely to achieve it, and even if we do, it won't bring us the satisfaction we anticipate. Which, when you think about it, explains why there are a lot of "successful" people who are deeply unhappy.

In order to choose goals that are aligned with our values, we first need to put some time into considering what our values are.

Being clear on our values is not only useful in helping us set goals, it can be incredibly helpful when life throws us curveballs; challenges, opportunities and big decisions to make. That's because your values (when you are clear on what they are!), can guide your decision-making, and help you to make choices and to keep you on track as you journey towards your healthy happy wonderful life.

When you are clear on your values as well as your goals, it can help you choose between the "hell yes!" and the "exit stage left!". This can help you choose jobs, business opportunities, even new friendships.

And once we have taken the time to get clear on our values, the most important question to ask is: Am I being true to them?

Do a little "audit" of all the different areas of your life. Is your work in line with your values? Your friendships? The things you do in your leisure time? How you spend your money? Invest?
And don't forget to check your goals to make sure they are aligned with your goals too!

Oh, and one more thing: our values can change over time. So it is a great idea to block out some time to check in with your values every year or so!

So are you ready to get clear on your values?
