For many years, when I was practising as a public interest lawyer working 70 hour weeks, travelling constantly and always on the brink of burnout, I never took the time to step back and look at the bigger picture. And sometimes I wonder what would have happened if I had....
These days I make a point of scheduling time to take a big step back, evaluate where I am, where I want to be, and the steps I need to take to get there. Every January, my husband and I go on retreat somewhere relaxing-but-fabulous*, switch off our phones, decompress, reflect, dream and plan. It's awesome!
And today I'm sharing some of the BIG QUESTIONS to ask yourself when you are ready to take a step back, block out some time and REALLY get in touch with yourself. I used to call this my DO-BE-HAVE-FEEL exercise, but over the years we have added a few more excellent questions.
Here they are:
WHAT DO I WANT TO DO?
WHO DO I WANT TO BE?
WHAT DO I WANT TO HAVE?
HOW DO I WANT TO FEEL?
WHAT DO I WANT TO GIVE?
WHAT DO I WANT TO EMBRACE?
WHAT DO I WANT TO LET GO OF?
WHAT DO I WANT TO LEARN?
WHAT DO I WANT TO TEACH?
WHO DO I WANT TO BE WITH?
WHAT DO I WANT TO LEAVE AS MY LEGACY?
Yup, I told you. BIIIIIIG questions. But ones well worth contemplating, no?
